The book nobody
ever keeps

A smallholder can farm the same hectare for twenty years and still have nothing a bank can read. The season lives in her head, in a pile of receipts, and in voice notes she never plays back. So the loan officer says no, the insurer says no, and the buyer names the price.

A woman standing chest-deep in her own maize, late in the season, the cobs still on the stalk.

Row written. No category picked, no form filled, no app opened.

It asks, it never assumes. If a figure is missing the bot comes back with one question, not a form. A ledger that invents numbers is worse than no ledger at all.

English and Nigerian Pidgin first. Hausa and Yoruba voice next, because the people who most need this are the least likely to type.

Nothing to install. It lives in WhatsApp, where the phone already is, on the data bundle you already buy.

WHAT IRUGBIN SAID BACK

  • Your fertilizer cost is high for this yield.

Fertilizer was 52% of your spend but you got 1,750 kg per hectare — about 30% under the average for maize around you. Same bags, wrong timing, is the usual cause. Split the urea next season: half at planting, half three weeks after.

  • Every ₦100 you put in came back as ₦223.

You spent ₦117,100 and sold ₦261,000. That is a real margin, written down, for one season. Two more like it and it is a lending history.

  • Below ₦8,364 a bag, you lose money.

That is your break-even: ₦117,100 of cost across 14 bags. Keep it in your head at the market. Anyone offering less is buying your season for nothing.

IRUGBIN · SUN 07:12

Maize is up ₦700 a bag at Dawanau this week and still climbing. You have 9 bags left. If you can wait two weeks, wait.

Your break-even is ₦8,364 a bag. Anything under that is a loss, no matter who is asking.

SHE WAITED

+₦9,000

Nine bags at ₦19,000 instead of ₦18,000. Not a fortune — two days of weeding labour, for reading one message. Do it every season and it is a bag of urea, every season.

Something you
can hand over

At the end of the season the book becomes a document: two pages, plain language, every figure traceable back to the day it was said. Print it, send it on WhatsApp, or carry it to the co-op.

  • A co-op loan officer

Sees cost, yield and margin in the format they already ask for.

  • An insurer

Gets dated activity — planting, inputs, harvest — not a claim written after the fact.

  • An aggregator

Can price against a real break-even instead of guessing what you will accept.

  • You

Know what last season actually cost before you agree to anything this one.

ENTRY 007THE POINT OF ALL OF ITCR

Three seasons and you stop being a risk

A lender is not refusing you out of malice. They cannot price what they cannot see. Every message you send builds the only thing that changes that answer — a history, dated, in the farmer’s own hand.

A FILEcost, yield, margin, repayment behaviour

WHAT A LENDER SEES INSTEAD OF A BLANK FORM

₦450,000

An input facility priced off three seasons of real margin, not off a guess about her village. That referral is how Irugbin makes money — from the lender, never from the farmer.

ENTRY 008AT THE COUNTER

What people ask
before they start

The same eight questions, in the order they usually come. Short answers, no asterisks.

01Do I need to download an app?

No. Irugbin works inside WhatsApp on the phone you already carry. Save the number, send one message, and the book is open. There is no sign-up form, no password and no data plan beyond what a message already costs.

02Can I use it if I cannot write well?

Yes. Send a voice note in the words you already use and Irugbin writes the entry for you, then reads its reading back for you to confirm. Nothing is entered until you agree it is right.

03What does it cost?

Keeping your book costs you nothing. Irugbin earns from lenders and insurers who pay for structured farm records, and only when you have said they may have yours.

04Will a bank actually accept the record?

The record is built in the shape lenders already ask for: cost of production, yield, margin, and every line dated to the day it was logged rather than reconstructed at season end. Acceptance is still the lender's decision — Irugbin is not a lender and does not promise anyone a loan.

05Who can see my records?

Nobody outside Irugbin, unless you send them. Sharing is asked for each time, per recipient and per season, and can be withdrawn for anything not already sent. Records are never sold to advertisers or data brokers.

06Are the numbers worked out by AI?

No. A language model only reads what you said. Every figure — totals, yield per hectare, break-even price, margin — is computed by a fixed costing engine, so the same entries always produce the same arithmetic, and every sum can be checked by eye.

07What if Irugbin reads an entry wrong?

Correct it in the chat and the record corrects itself. Corrections are recorded as corrections with the original line kept, because a record that can be silently rewritten is worth nothing to a lender.

08Which crops does it handle?

Maize, cassava, rice and tomato at launch, in bags, kilogrammes, litres, hectares and days — the units farmers already speak in. Other crops can be logged, with per-hectare benchmarks added as the price data catches up.

ANYTHING ELSE — ASK IT IN THE CHAT. A PERSON READS THE ONES THE BOT CANNOT ANSWER.
